This is an English translation of an article published in\u00a0Nikkan San<\/a>\u00a0on May 7, 2020, as a part of my column, \u201cThe Way of the Pianist<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s been 5+ weeks since California Governor Newsom issued “Safer-at-Home” measures on March 19th. I hope this finds my readers in good health and spirit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been having Zoom parties these days with friends from near and far. For an hour or so, we gather in front of our computers with the drinks of our choice, and just take turns sharing our latest. Many people have longer hair than usual. Last night, a male friend observed in shock how “every man on this meeting has been shaving!”…except for him. It made us laugh, and it reminded me of something another friend had shared with me a long time ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a part of the training to become a member of the special operation forces, they apparently go through a training simulating actual battles for days in harsh environment. They barely have enough food, let alone things like a mirror, but my friend told me how they were required to shave each morning. This is crucial to keep the morale up because they determine their own states based on how their teammates look to them, so it is crucial to look your best, he explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes sense, especially in consideration of Chameleon Effect – a human trait that instinctively makes us imitate the facial and physical expressions of people we are with. As the saying goes, when you smile the whole world smiles with you. So naturally, if the person you are with is clean shaven with good posture, you feel inclined to do the same. Things like a smile creates a virtuous circle. That’s why I wear makeup and evening gowns on my videos, especially during this time of our quarantine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future is always uncertain, and our survival instinct gravitates towards the fear of the unknown. However, we also have our rationality to override things like our fear and survival instincts and pay attention to the gorgeous weather outside. How the birds are chirping and the flowers are blooming. By savoring the transient beauty of our surrounding world, we can choose to see the glass half full, and smile, starting the virtuous circle around us.
