{"id":2750,"date":"2022-09-27T12:49:05","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T19:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicalmakiko.com\/en\/?p=2750"},"modified":"2022-09-27T15:42:26","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T22:42:26","slug":"bodhisattvas-with-instruments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicalmakiko.com\/en\/healing-power-of-music\/2750","title":{"rendered":"Bodhisattvas with instruments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is the English translation of my Japanese article to appear in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nikkansan.com\/english_info\" target=\"_blank\">Nikkan San<\/a>&nbsp;on Sep 18, 2022, as a part of my bi-weekly column, \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nikkansan.com\/column\/writer\/makiko_hirata\" target=\"_blank\">The Way of the Pianist<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I often have my eyes closed when I play. Given from the list of blind keyboardists throughout history, it&#8217;s self-evident that piano-playing doesn&#8217;t require looking. Occasionally, when there is a large leap I look at the landing keys for accuracy. But I&#8217;ve also practiced with a magazine on the music stand during practice sessions that required more quantity over quality &#8211; don&#8217;t tell my mom!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/musicalmakiko.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/PXL_20220922_014146068.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2751 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what&#8217;s on my music stand now, you might ask. I have five postcards. During my four-day trip to Japan a few weeks ago, I visited Byodoin Temple (11th C) in Uji, Kyoto. There, I fell in love with the 52 Bodhisattvas, 27 of whom held instruments like bell and drum, flute and pipes, lyre and koto.<\/h5>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/99\/37\/40\/99374042cfffc1c184bf49b157df4413.jpg\" alt=\"\u5e73\u7b49\u9662\u9cf3\u51f0\u5802 \u96f2\u4e2d\u4f9b\u990a\u83e9\u85a9 | Symbole bouddhiste, Bouddhisme, Art bouddhiste\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There is a Bodhisattva that is really listening to the ringing of the bell after the strike. Another one has a subtle smile that reflects the uncontainable joy of the drumming. There is also one, wholeheartedly focused on the next note to come out of that chime. I picked especially those five from whose still-image I could almost hear their music. They embody my ideal musicianship. They are fully grounded, content, and benevolent.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the water that flooded a third of Pakistan last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/09\/24\/1124915475\/pakistan-is-still-reeling-from-unprecedented-floods-that-caused-widespread-destr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is still there<\/a>. On the other hand, major rivers all over the world are drying up, leading to supply chain and hydroelectricity disruptions. Not only Ukrainians, but also Afghans, Syrians, Yemeni, Ethiopians, Rohingya,  Uyghurs and others continue to suffer extreme hardships. I promote music as an overlooked social resource, but whom am I helping, really&#8230;.? I was feeling frustrated, when I met these musical Bodhisattvas.
