{"id":2808,"date":"2022-12-13T20:44:17","date_gmt":"2022-12-14T04:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicalmakiko.com\/en\/?p=2808"},"modified":"2022-12-26T21:29:09","modified_gmt":"2022-12-27T05:29:09","slug":"the-power-of-music-and-gershwin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicalmakiko.com\/en\/musical-activism\/2808","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Music and Gershwin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is the English translation of my Japanese article for&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nikkansan.com\/english_info\" target=\"_blank\">Nikkan San<\/a>, a part of my bi-weekly column, \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nikkansan.com\/column\/writer\/makiko_hirata\" target=\"_blank\">The Way of the Pianist<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm22\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/162081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the opportunities and perform and speak for climate scientists <\/a>at the American Geophysical Union as a part of the <a href=\"Music for Climate Action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tempo: Music for Climate Action<\/a> team. The space was large, seating 1,800. What is the essence of my message? It was a good opportunity for me to reevaluate my mission. At the end, I decided that my role as a musician was to focus on joy and hope. I chose the jazzy and playful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CmAbFNnrYPn\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gershwin&#8217;s Prelude<\/a> to open the presentation with. And then, I gave the following speech. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What you just heard was a Japanese pianist playing a piece written by a Jewish composer, inspired by jazz.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Music is, indeed, a universal language.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I am a granddaughter of an atomic bomb survivor. The piece I played was composed by a son of Russian Jewish immigrants, in a style developed by African-Americans from the South. &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Music is a reminder that what we share is greater than our differences.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We share our wonders of the unknowns. We share our love of laughter, food, and each other. And we share this planet earth, our home that binds us and our fate together.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Music is both an expression and a source of our resilience.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Roza and Moische Gershowitz came to the United States to escape the rising antisemitism. They became Rose and Morris Gershwine, and birthed the iconic American composer, George Gershwin, in 1898, in Brooklyn, NY. His music is a melting pot of popular and classical music, and jazz, making it both quintessentially American, and universally human.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Music gives voice to the voiceless, efficacy to the marginalized and a sense of belonging to the isolated and divided. Music is contagious. It propagates ideas and disseminates information. Music is vital. It embodies what we live for, and fight for.
