Last week, I was here:\u00a0Belvoir Terrace in Lenox, MA.<\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"<\/p>\n

It is exactly the type of castle where I imagined my favorite princesses to live in, when I was a child.<\/p>\n

It is also the home to ArtsAhimsa Chamber Music Festival. (http:\/\/www.artsahimsa.org\/events\/fest\/index.htm<\/a>) It was my third year returning there as a faculty member. Each year, I grow more fond of the community of music lovers, each of them highly accomplished in their own fields of expertise, outside of their love of music.<\/p>\n

This year, in addition to my regular teaching and performing, I moderated a panel discussion. Entitled “Healing the World through Music and Art,” the members of the panel were all impressive, phenomenal women.<\/div>\n

We opened the discussion by reading from ArtsAhimsa’s mission “to promote non-violence through the universal language of the Arts. …The Arts can bring us together and remind us that what we share, our common humanity, is greater\u00a0than our differences.”<\/p>\n

Then we all clapped our hands together in rhythm to my lead. This always breaks the ice, and makes people laugh a bit.\u00a0 Neuroscience tells us that even simple synchronization like the coordinated hand clapping makes us happier and like each other more. Data collected by new advancing medical technology has been reaffirming the power of music that we have already known through our own personal experience performing throughout the world. Music synchronizes our heart beats and breathing: Some scientists say, even our brainwaves. Communal experience of music strengthens our bonds. Music’s power over us is because we are social animals. Since we are social animals, we are at our best, and our happiest, when we are helping each other. So, let’s use music to help others!<\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Following our clapping exercise, each member of the panel spoke about their expertise and why they believed that music (or art) can help us help others.<\/p>\n

Nancy Goldberg<\/strong> has been the director of Belvoir Terrace Summer Girls Performing Arts Camp for nearly a half century, empowering generations of 150 girls each year through arts education.\u00a0https:\/\/www.belvoirterrace.com\/owners-and-staff\/<\/a>\u00a0She also has opened up the summer camp to provide musical opportunities for people with Williams Syndrome.\u00a0https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/08\/26\/us\/a-music-camp-for-those-afflicted-but-gifted-too.html<\/a>\u00a0As an education specialist, and from her work at Belvoir Terrace, she is convinced that art education is crucial to nurturing flexible perspective and compassionate attitude.<\/p>\n

Lynn Nowels<\/b>\u00a0is a cellist. On the panel, she shared her experience as a teacher at Bridge Boston Charter School, “designed to serve the most vulnerable children,” with the belief that “the most effective way to lift children out of poverty is by equipping them with an excellent education.”\u00a0http:\/\/bridgebostoncs.org\/<\/a>\u00a0She described how full attention of an\u00a0adult\u00a0in a quiet room\u00a0already is\u00a0a luxury for many of these children. With\u00a0potential\u00a0gang harassment\u00a0in some neighborhoods, or\u00a0difficult family situations, “their life circumstances are ones that I or my children\u00a0never could\u00a0have imagined” she explained. She described\u00a0how\u00a0focusing on placing the bow properly on a string, for example, really challenges them in so many ways, improving their concentration, patience,\u00a0persistence,\u00a0and cognitive skills, eventually bringing confidence and great joy.<\/p>\n

Stephanie Engel<\/strong>\u00a0is a psychiatrist who has been regularly volunteering at Village Health Works, “a rapidly growing grassroots nonprofit organization that provides quality, compassionate health care in a dignified environment in rural Burundi, East \u00a0Africa.”\u00a0http:\/\/villagehealthworks.org.onexcale.net\/index<\/a>\u00a0Burundi suffered from a genocide and civil war from 1993-2005.Its circumstances and severity were similar to what its neighbor Rwanda went through. Stephanie established its mental health services and teaches the medical staff at Village Health Works psychiatric care. When she first arrived there, she was struck by the healing power of the drumming in their culture. She advised them that communal gathering, drumming and mentorship of adolescents from traditional musicians can be\u00a0 more healing than anything else psychiatry could offer for the traumatized young people who grew up during the war. Now, Village Health Works has five full-time musical staff as a part of their team.\u00a0 She is also a flutist.<\/p>\n

Flutist\u00a0B\u00e4rli Nugent<\/strong>\u00a0is at The Juilliard School, serving as the\u00a0Assistant Dean and Director of Chamber Music, Director of the Mentoring Program, and a member of the Graduate Studies and Pre-College faculties. A highlight of her graduate students\u2019 exploration of the power of music to change lives is their active participation in a Mark Morris’ Dance Group’s\u00a0Sing and Dance for PD\u00a0<\/i>(Parkinson’s Disease) class\u00a0https:\/\/danceforparkinsons.org\/<\/a>.\u00a0 And in June, she curated and performed in a concert co-sponsored by the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration, presenting composers from Afghanistan, Austria, China, Iran and Turkey affected by immigration, including two world premieres. “Voices of Migration<\/i>,” she said “was inspired by my own background as a child of an immigrant parent.”\u00a0https:\/\/www.indepthnews.net\/index.php\/global-governance\/un-insider\/1964-un-in-vienna-stages-world-premieres-by-migrant-composers<\/a><\/p>\n

Adreienn Nassau<\/strong> worked for World Bank and oversaw Cultural Heritage Projects in Bosnia, St. Petersburg and Turkey. She explained how restoration of culture not only helps re-establish identity in communities facing difficulties, but it also creates jobs, attracts international attention, boosts tourism and eventually leads to economic recovery. She is also a cellist.<\/p>\n

Judith Prowda\u00a0<\/strong>is an art lawyer and Faculty at Sotheby’s Institute of Art where she teaches graduate courses in art law in the Master’s of Art Business Program.\u00a0https:\/\/www.sothebysinstitute.com\/<\/a>\u00a0She is also the author\u00a0of Visual Arts and the Law: A Handbook for Professionals (Lund Humphries 2013), and a principal and founding member of Stropheus Art Law.\u00a0\u00a0https:\/\/stropheus.com\/<\/a>.\u00a0 She explained what art law is, and many different types of services she provides to artists, owners\/buyers, dealers and administrators. They involve issues such as copyright, contracts, authenticity, title and dispute resolution.\u00a0 She recently participated in the creation of a specialized art tribunal, the Court of Arbitration for Art, that was launched in The Hague in June 2018. Through the New York State Bar Association’s Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Law Section, she regularly provides pro bono services and organizes legal educational programs for artists and arts organizations.\u00a0\u00a0http:\/\/www.nysba.org\/EASLHomePage\/<\/a>\u00a0Judith is also a violinist.<\/p>\n

Laura Jean Goldberg\u00a0<\/strong>is a violinist and the founder\/director of ArtsAhimsa. She has also been a faculty member at The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division for decades, where I first met her. She spoke about the inspiration she finds in Gandhi’s non-violence, and her experience performing in India, especially at Mother Teresa’s.<\/p>\n

After the panel, throughout the rest of the week at the festival, so many people came up to me to tell me how they were inspired by the idea of helping others through their music, and what they thought they could do. They shared their plans and ideas on various different ways in sharing their music with their community through teaching and performance. We are empowered by music, and each other. Music rocks.<\/p>\n
