When you have little time to practice…

Yesterday was a busy day – great, but filled with meetings one after the other.
It was not just busy, schedule wise, but it also made my mind run with so many thoughts.
I left home at 7:30 in the morning, and came home around 8PM.
I don’t practice after 9PM out of respect for my neighbors.
And I quickly made this video: Day 19 of my 100-day practice challenge.

And I got thinking…

I always stress the importance of daily practice. One of my mantras to my students is “if you have the time to go to the bathroom, you have the time to practice!”

And often, I find these short practice sessions to be more effective. They tend to be more intense, focused, concentrating on specific issues, goal oriented, etc.

I think it’s partially because the time before, and after, a practice session is just as important. Before you get to the piano, your brain is sorting out what needs to be worked on, strategies of problem solving, reviewing the previous practice session… And afterward, your brain is reviewing what you have done.

And by doing multiple short practice-sessions, as opposed to hours and hours of sitting in front of the piano, you get  multiple of these mental practice before and after’s.

I like that!
