Live-streaming Every Day.

I wonder how this finds you, my readers.

I think about each one of you; my friends on my mailing list I call from time to time; audience members at some of my past events; then there are some of you whom I have never met in person.

If you are like me, the news these days are hard to take. I thought we were almost on the other side of this. …That soon, we will go back to our lives as we knew it before Covid-19. But now, things seem to be going backward.

The urge to promote music as a healing agent nags me.

We are dealing, not just with Covid-19, but its economic impact and issues of social injustice and inequality. While all of these feel overwhelming, music and arts can serve as inexpensive/accessible resources that can reduce our stress and manage our pains. And because its effect is relatively easy to distribute, it can serve as a social equalizer. My knowledge in the area exasperate the urgency I feel to share my music. It is like a present – all wrapped up with ribbons and all. If I have to hold onto it, it becomes a painful reminder of the opportunities I am missing; opportunities to help.

  • Here is the list of my regular live-streams
    • 30 min of my morning practice every weekday from Monday to Friday at 6AM (PT)/9AM (ET).
    • A weekend 30 min concert on Saturdays at 5PM (PT)/8PM (PT).

I know that 6AM is early for many of my friends on the West Coast, but you can watch it as a recording later as well. Here is the link to my 6AM session on Monday. I am going through one variation from the Goldberg Variations. I will do Var. III on Monday, then IV on Tuesday, so on and so forth.

I am hoping that the regularity of my streaming may provide you with some sense of normalcy. It’s OK if you cannot watch me play. Know that whatever is going on in the world, I am committed to my daily practice. That somewhere in the world, pianists like me – I know it is not just me – get up and practice. We are committed to the art and beauty. We have faith in the power of music to bring out the best in all of us. It is my way of sending off my well-wishes to the world, my form of prayer.

Wishing you a restful, enjoyable weekend.

If there is anything I can do to be helpful, please do let me know.

  1. Good Morning, Makiko!!
It is 5:59 on Thursday Morning. I have no idea how to log into your livestream for today’s session. Can you send me a link?

    1. Good morning, Larry!
If you are a subscriber to my YouTube channel, then you should get a notice every time I start a live stream.
If you are not yet a subscriber, please become one!
You can also go to my YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/c/MakikoHirata
And whatever is live-streaming at the time should be featured on the top page.
You can also ”Videos” tab, then click “uploads” and select “Live streams” – it should come at the very top!
Thank you so much for joining us today, and for all of your questions.
You encouraged others to start commenting too. A great contribution!!
      Makiko
